Watch Alabama Shakes Play SNL

By Will Oliver, March 3rd 2015

Alabama Shakes SNL

It’s amazing to see how far Alabama Shakes have come over the years. After seeing them at Bonnaroo in 2012 I knew that big things were on the horizon for the Alabama rock group. Well here we are three years later and the band just played SNL. Yeah, they’ve blown up.

The SNL performance was to promote the release of their new album Sound & Color on April 21st via ATO Records. They played the thrilling first single “Don’t Wanna Fight” as well as the more recent track, “Gimme All Your Love.” 50 Shades Of Grey star Dakota Johnson was the host and had the pleasure of introducing the group.

Both tracks were triumphantly performed by the group, who always deliver one of the tightest live shows that you’ll see these days. Frontwoman Brittany Howard delivers a powerhouse performance, that has surely captured many news fans for herself and the band. It’s incredible to see their rise, but when they are able to take on SNL as if they’ve played it half a dozen times before, they’re ready for the big time.

Find both performances posted below, along with the studio versions.

Watch St. Vincent Play SNL

By Will Oliver, May 20th 2014

St. Vincent SNL

Over the weekend St. Vincent played the season finale of SNL. This was a major win for music if you ask me, no matter if it “confused the masses.”

She played both “Digital Witness” and “Birth In Reverse” off of this year’s self-titled album. It was awesome to see her rocking the stage, doing her thing in front of a national audience. SNL alum Andy Samberg was the host.

Check out both of her performances below. Find my coverage of her show at Terminal 5 from earlier in the year right here.

Parquet Courts have shared the details of their new album. It’s called Sunbathing Animal and out June 3 via What’s Your Rupture?/Mom + Pop.

They’ve shared the first single and title track, a ball of energy that comes right at your bursting hard out of the gate. I can already imagine myself moshing along to this in the crowd at Brooklyn’s Sugarhill Supper Club this summer. Tickets for that show are still on sale. Get them while you can.

Stream “Sunbathing Animal” below. Catch the album tracklist and their 2014 tour dates below that.

The National Play SNL

By Will Oliver, March 18th 2014

The National SNL

Things are finally calming down for me after a busy and wild 10 trek in Austin for SXSW. As you could tell I didn’t have time to post, so I’m playing catch up in a major way.

One of the things I sadly missed was The National‘s epic Saturday Night Live debut. Although I wasn’t able to watch it live, I was just proud to see that they killed it as usual.

They performed a very riveting performance of “Graceless” and a refined offering of “I Need My Girl.” It was a big stage for them, but they brought it home (literally). Very proud to see them on the SNL stage. About damn time, if you ask me.

I’ve shared both of their performances below, in case you also were busy at SXSW, or if you just want to see it again.

The National To Play SNL

By Will Oliver, February 28th 2014

The National

“It’s about god damn time.”

That’s what I said out loud when I read that The National were booked as the musical guests on the March 8 episode of Saturday Night Live. Lena Dunham of Girls will be the host.

After all these years, it feels like a victory to see the band booked for SNL. They sure do deserve it. It will continue to push them towards a much bigger audience, something that they’ve been growing steadily with every year it seems.

No one deserves this more. Be sure to tune in or set your DVR’s. This is going to be awesome.

Watch Arcade Fire On SNL | Live Special: Here Comes The Night

By Will Oliver, September 30th 2013 — with 1 comment

Arcade Fire
had a big weekend. On Saturday they were the musical guests on SNL and played new single “Reflektor” along with brand new song “Afterlife.” They also participated in a few live skits on the show. After SNL their live concert special “Here Comes The Night” aired. It featured footage from their special hometown show earlier in the month at Montreal’s Club Salsathèque.

Not only did they play 3 new songs for the special (“Here Comes The Night Time”, “We Exist” and “Normal Person”) but a shit-ton of special guests made cameos. Try this list on for size:

Bono, Bill Hader, Zach Galifianakis, Ben Stiller, Rainn Wilson, Michael Cera, James Franco, Aziz Ansari, Eric Wareheim, Jason Schwartzman. Wow.

Below you can find the special, along with both SNL performances.
