[music video]: Chastity Belt – “Joke”

By Will Oliver, May 13th 2015

Chastity Belt

Chastity Belt will be playing alongside Courtney Barnett next week for three sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom, along with a show of their own at Rough Trade. The shows are in support of their new album Time To Go Home, which is out now via Hardly Art.

The group recently released their music video for album track “Joke,” using footage they took of themselves out on the road for their recent spring tour across the country. Shake weights are involved. It’s great.

Catch the video posted below, along with the rest of their U.S. tour dates.

Apparently I got Chinese New Year confused with the end of 2014, as it took me until now to finally share my list of favorite songs from 2014. It’s late, but you better bet it’s a true indication of my favorite songs of 2014. These are the 100 songs that I played and enjoyed the most and are still playing on regular rotation. They came from the most established artists like Beck, as well as newcomers such as Alvvays, Leon Bridges and Flyte. It’s a bit all over the map stylistically, which is a good thing if you ask me.

I’ve posted the list of songs below from 100-1. I’ve turned the entire list into a spotify playlist (keep in mind some tracks weren’t on spotify so if that’s the case, just come back here and you can click the song it will take you to the tracks soundcloud/youtube page). Head to the bottom of the page for the spotify playlist, or just head here.

With that said, here are my favorite songs that were released in 2014, finally:

Best Albums of 2014: Honorable Mentions

There was a lot of great music released in 2014, a lot more than can be represented fairly in a top 50 list. Sometimes some quality stuff just slips through the cracks, just barely missing the cut. But that doesn’t mean that these albums didn’t get plenty of love from me throughout the year.

This year I decided to do a separate posts of some honorable mentions for albums that just fell shy of making the list. All of these are well worth your time. They’re posted below in no particular order or ranking:

Favorite Live Photos of 2014

By Will Oliver, February 5th 2015

(Foals at Terminal 5)

There was no shortage of great shows to be found in 2014. You can find the best 50 that I saw in 2014 right here. Throughout the year, we took thousands upon thousands of photos, documenting every moment of these unforgettable shows. We put in a lot of work trying to capture the essence of these performances, and I wanted to share these photos with you in one giant collection.

These are not only photos that I took, but also photos taken by our great team of contributing photographers. They’re posted in chronological order, as there was simply no other right way to go about ordering the photos. Below each photo, is the link to the original post, as well as the photographer credit (if it’s other than myself).

So with that said, sit back, and enjoy our favorite live concert photos that we took in 2014. You can also find the gallery posted over at our facebook page. There’s probably one too many photos posted here, but we probably saw way too many shows.

Recap: CMJ 2014 (Favorite Shows and Photos)

By Will Oliver, November 13th 2014

This year’s CMJ came and went as fast as ever. Going into the fest, I didn’t know what to expect. I ended up leaving pretty surprised about how much great music I saw. (Hell, we even threw our own showcase)

Somewhere in between the various free drinks of alcohol and catch up sessions with friends and fellow music lovers, I found time to catch a bunch of sets of music (almost 40 to be exact). From fresh-faced bands trying to make it, to the more established acts who just happened to be in town for more “official” showcase. From the insanity of Fat White Family’s live show, to the return of Slowdive, there was no shortage of quality music being performed live.

You can find all the show coverage sprinkled through the last few pages of the blog, but here were some of my favorite performance from CMJ 2014, as well as some of my favorite photos that resulted.

Parquet Courts have shared the details of their new album. It’s called Sunbathing Animal and out June 3 via What’s Your Rupture?/Mom + Pop.

They’ve shared the first single and title track, a ball of energy that comes right at your bursting hard out of the gate. I can already imagine myself moshing along to this in the crowd at Brooklyn’s Sugarhill Supper Club this summer. Tickets for that show are still on sale. Get them while you can.

Stream “Sunbathing Animal” below. Catch the album tracklist and their 2014 tour dates below that.

SXSW 2014 Recap

By Will Oliver, March 22nd 2014

Chromeo

It’s rather unfortunate that SXSW 2014 will be remembered for the unforgivable actions of one fool. The lives lost as well as those who were left injured in the accident is a truly horrific tragedy that cast a dark shadow over what was supposed to be a fun – and safe – festival. I hadn’t commented on the accident prior to this, but I just wanted to say that my thoughts and wishes go out to all of those affected by the senseless accident that occurred. Hopefully swift justice is served on that idiot behind the wheel.

Festival attendees tried to go about their business the best they could, and although it was a somber mood throughout the week, we still tried to make do. I saw quite a few great shows at my 2nd SXSW, and wanted to share some of the best with you in this little recap in case you’re too lazy to scroll through all the posts.

I’ve also attached some of the best photos I managed to take throughout the week. So without further ado, here are the best shows that I saw at SXSW 2014:

1. Ty Segall/Ex-Cult @ Street-Legal Guitars
2. Future Islands @ Hype Hotel
3. Hundred Waters @ Red 7
4. Damon Albarn @ Fader Fort
5. Coachwhips @ Beerland
6. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart @ Red 7
7.Chromeo @ Hype Hotel

Ty Segall has done it yet again. Although I’ve seen him a few times now, his show at a guitar shop space was wild and intense, the most thrilling show I’ve seen yet. Ex-Cult played with them and were just as money. Based on Future Islands performance at Hype Hotel, and all the chatter about them throughout the festival, this is their year. They absolutely killed it live, transcendent in every way of the word. Hundred Waters put on the most elegant and thought provoking performance of the week. I finally got to see the legendary Damon Albarn, who played some solo stuff, Gorillaz stuff, and brought out quite a few guests, including the one, and only, Snoop Dogg. I saw John Dwyer’s old band Coachwhips go nuts at a bar, and somehow saw a full set from Chromeo in a tiny place. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have a new lineup but rocked out just the same.

Also, a special shout out to all the fellow bloggers and friends who I hung out with at Austin. It was great to see all of you guys. Keep on doing your thing!

All in all, SXSW 2014 was a great time.
